Can bed wetting be considered a sleep disorder? Some recent research has shown a link between bed wetting and sleep apnea, which is a condition that causes the throat muscles to relax thereby obstructing adequate airflow. It’s been observed that children who snore and wet the bed may be suffering from a form of sleep apnea that can be successfully cured.

Overview of Bed Wetting and Sleep Apnea

To thoroughly understand the relationship between these two conditions, an overview of bed wetting and sleep apnea may clarify things. Bed wetting, medically known as enuresis, is a common problem that usually goes away as the child ages. Around sixteen percent of five-year-old children wet the bed, but that number goes down to five percent for ten-year-olds. This condition is seen more in boys than in girls and may run in families. The major causes of bed wetting are a very small bladder or the slower development of the nerves that control bladder function. Effective treatments have included an alarm system with wires that attach to the pajamas or underwear. A noise is made when moisture is detected, which wakes up the sleeping child and thereby develops an awareness of bladder control. However, if the child both wets the bed and snores, sleep apnea should be considered a causative factor.

What’s the Connection?

Obstructive sleep apnea can cause a child to snore, as the airflow is restricted in the throat. The child will therefore have a restless night and be excessively tired during the day. Morning headaches and trouble concentrating in school may also be seen. Researchers feel that the connection between bed wetting and sleep apnea is based on the chemical imbalance that happens in the brain. When the brain isn’t able to receive a steady input of oxygen, this creates a situation where the signals from the bladder are not properly received. The result is bed wetting. But there is some good news. The primary cause of this type of sleep apnea is large adenoids. When the adenoids are removed, the snoring stops, the breathing improves and the bed wetting situation is resolved. It should be noted that generally only a small percentage of children both snore and wet their beds. While there is a connection between the two situations, parents should not immediately opt for surgery until a definite cause and effect relationship has been established. Although bed wetting often stops when a child is older, if there are any symptoms of sleep apnea present, discuss them with your doctor.

Of the different forms of sleep apnea, central sleep apnea is one of the rarest kinds that do not affect too many people and in fact, it occurs just because there may be problems receiving and transmitting brain signals which result in periodic stopped breathing while you are sleeping. What’s more, if you happen to have this rare form of sleep apnea, you may also become affected by obstructive sleep apnea that is the more common form of sleep apnea and which, as the name implies, occurs due to blocked or obstructed airways.

Using A Drug Called Ambien

Certainly, there are many different types of treatment methods available for handling obstructive sleep apnea, though the same cannot be said in the case of central sleep apnea, even in spite of recent advancements in using a sleep drug named Ambien that will surely benefit you in case you use it to treat central sleep apnea. However there is no doubting the fact that, according to evidence gathered as a result of studies made on patients using Ambien to cure central sleep apnea, the effectiveness of Ambien has been proven to be quite good, and this can be seen when considering that the drug helped in reducing sleep apnea episodes from an average of thirty to thirteen per patient.

However, there is still need to study the long term effects of Ambien as a drug to treat central sleep apnea and thus before considering using it for your central sleep apnea problem, be apprised that Ambien has yet to be fully tested for this use and you should also not use it unless specifically recommended by your doctor.

It would also pay to know the difference between central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea and even become aware whether you don’t in fact have a third type of sleep apnea, which is known as mixed sleep apnea that is basically a combination of both types of sleep apnea types.

Also, though the symptoms of both obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea can sometimes be similar, the causes for each kind are more than likely going to be different in each case. As mentioned, central sleep apnea is a very rare type of sleep apnea and it is quite unlike the more common obstructive sleep apnea, and if you have the former, you will surely experience difficulties in brain timing, which when it does not fire the way that it should will result in inadequate oxygen while you are sleeping.

Also, it is common for those suffering from central sleep apnea to wake up numerous times during the night and they will also gasp or choke for breath, and such episodes can occur as many as hundred times in a night thereby robbing the patient of valuable sleep and rest.

So, whether you suspect having central sleep apnea or obstructive sleep apnea, you need to consult your doctor and get a treatment program prescribed at the earliest in order to get much needed relief.

Sleep apnea is a condition that is suffered by many. Most patients are not even aware that they have a medical problem as the symptoms seem to be somewhat benign. Sleep apnea symptoms include such broad problems as snoring, sore throats, being tired during the day and even morning headaches. All of these conditions can be explained away by other problems like a dry climate or restless sleeping.

Sleep apnea can be caused by the brain’s signals to control breathing being interrupted or by the muscles within the throat relaxing and causing the throat to narrow in size and restrict the air flow. If a patient has sleep apnea, they are not getting a good nights rest. With sleep apnea, the brain realizes that the body has stopped breathing and wakes a person up to get their breathing pattern back on track. This may not even be noticed by a patient, or in more serious cases they may realize they are waking up at night.

Finding A Del Mar Sleep Apnea Doctor

There are many physicians that deal with sleep apnea. A Del Mar sleep apnea doctor can be located by either going on-line or looking through local telephone directories. A Del Mar sleep apnea doctor may be experienced in diagnosing sleep apnea or other sleep disorders. A Del Mar sleep apnea doctor may work in a clinic that specializes in working with all types of sleep disorders and can be the best choice when dealing with sleep apnea.

A Del Mar sleep apnea doctor may request that you come in for a physical and answer questions in regards to your nightly habits. Some Del Mar sleep apnea doctors may suggest a patient loose weight or even stop smoking as ways to deal with sleep apnea. Before getting diagnoses of sleep apnea though, patients may be required to spend an evening at the sleep clinic where they will be fully evaluated during the night. They will be monitored and this information will give the doctors a good idea of what is happening during the night.

This information will show a doctor if a patient is experiencing sleep apnea that is impacted their oxygen flow during the night. This restricted flow of oxygen can become a serious problem and needs to be dealt with.

A Del Mar sleep apnea doctor will be able to recommend some treatment options after a diagnosis is made. Patients can have full and happy lives even when they have sleep apnea.

When a person is suffering the symptoms of sleep apnea, it may not always be apparent as to what is causing the problem. Many of the symptoms are the same, even with obstructive sleep apnea and if a person believes they are having difficulty sleeping, in the San Diego area they can arrange to visit an Encinitas sleep apnea doctor to determine their individual needs. Typically, obstructive sleep apnea does not strike all at once, rather it develops over time and in some cases is ignored by the patient until a bedmate demands they do something about their disruptive snoring.

However, not all sleep apnea is accompanied by snoring. Others signs that a person is suffering from disruptive sleep patterns can be waking up groggy in the mornings and feeling tired all the following day. Having trouble concentrating on normal daily tasks is another symptom to discuss with an Encinitas sleep apnea doctor.

In some cases alignment of the jaw may be causing a person to have trouble sleeping during the night and a dental device to help maintain proper alignment may be needed. By visiting an Encinitas sleep apnea doctor, they will probably recommend a night’s stay in a sleep lab where specialists can provide a proper diagnosis of what is causing the sleep apnea. The Encinitas sleep apnea doctor can then provide the appropriate treatment.

Different Devices Produce Different Results

Depending on the cause of the sleep apnea, one of the 16 FDA approved dental devices may provide the relief needed. However, many of the Encinitas sleep apnea doctors also work with dentists to help fit the patient with the right device. Additionally, to determine if a device is providing effective treatment, a second night in the sleep lab may be necessary. This would insure that the treatment method selected is effective for the type of apnea suffered by the patient.

If the apnea is caused by the soft tissue in the back of throat closing and blocking the airway, a continuous positive airway pressure mask may be prescribed. Again, it will require a night in the sleep lab to make the diagnosis and affect an effective treatment method. Masks are available to cover only the mouth or full-face masks that cover the mouth and the nose and is useful for those who cannot breath through their nose w hile they sleep. The type of mask needed will be determined by the Encinitas sleep apnea doctor.

If you or someone you love suffers from sleep apnea, how sleep apnea impacts your health is important for you to know and understand. Treatment for sleep apnea is available, and you need to determine whether your sleep apnea is impacting your health so severely that you need to get treatment

Sleep apnea is a serious disorder that collapses the airway of the sleep apnea sufferer. The condition is characterized by loud snoring and occurs most often in overweight males and other people whose necks are more than 17 inches in diameter.

Sleep Apnea Impacts Your Sex Life

One way how sleep apnea impacts your health is that it decreases your sexual desire and sexual arousal; sleep apnea can also cause your orgasms to be less intense. In a recent study, patients who were treated for sleep apnea reported significant improvement in their sexuality after they underwent treatment for sleep apnea.

Daytime Sleepiness

Another way how sleep apnea impacts your health is that it causes you to be extremely sleep during the day – and no wonder. Sleep apnea sufferers’ sleep is constantly interrupted, 20 to 30 times every night. During an eight-hour sleep session, someone who suffers from sleep apnea may never sleep for more than ten minutes at a time.

Sleep Apnea And Increased Risk Of Car Accidents

In a Canadian study of 800 patients with sleep apnea, the patients were almost five times more likely than drivers without sleep apnea to have head-on car accidents and accidents involving injuries. Even patients with mild sleep apnea had the same increased risk as patients with severe sleep apnea. If this is how sleep apnea impacts your health, you should seek treatment right away.

Sleep Apnea And Increased Risk Of Diabetes

Another way sleep apnea impacts your health is how it increases your risk of diabetes. Every time your airway collapses while you sleep, you stop breathing and your body suffers from low levels of oxygen in the blood.

Your brain tries to wake you up by flooding your bloodstream with a surge of hormones. You wake up, you go back to sleep, and the cycle repeats itself, again and again, until it’s time to get up in the morning.

The surge of hormones and chemicals your brain orders your glands to secrete into your bloodstream when you stop breathing creates stress hormones that scientists believe affect the cells in your body that make insulin, a hormone related to diabetes.

Sleep apnea is a condition in which there is no air flow for about ten seconds or sometimes evens more and which can occur when a person’s throat is completely closed while they are inhaling. The problem that is sleep apnea is also known to be quite rampant with about twenty percent of adults having experienced it even in its mildest form and according to figures released, there could be as many as, it is believed, forty million Americans affected by sleep apnea though the same has gone undetected in them. Also, sleep apnea can often even become a major threat to a person’s life and so requires being diagnosed and treated at the earliest.

Consult Your Doctor

If you suspect or even are sure that you are suffering from sleep apnea and need to locate a La Jolla sleep apnea doctor, then you should get in touch with your doctor who can answer questions related to your problem. Because sleep apnea is a dangerous as well as progressive sleep disorder that worsens as a person becomes older, it will not only rob you of valuable sleep, but will put your life in danger as well and so there is no time to be lost in dillydallying about consulting a doctor.

The La Jolla sleep apnea doctor that you select should be able to perform the required examinations in order to diagnose the problem and would require you to answer many questions including those that relate to positions that cause snoring, prior nasal surgery history, the person observing you when you snore, and also whether you are taking alcohol or not. In addition, the La Jolla sleep apnea doctor must enquire about your nasal symptoms, throat and other symptoms after which he or she can arrive at a conclusion as to what is causing you to suffer from sleep apnea.

Also, in case you are in your forties and have excess weight on your body, you should have yourself checked by a La Jolla sleep apnea doctor for common symptoms including those such as constant tiredness, snoring, high blood pressure, poor concentration as well as awakenings at night and for which there is no clear explanation. The good news is that any decent La Jolla sleep apnea doctor will be able to treat sleep apnea and may even succeed in eliminating the problem through recommending means to lower blood glucose as well as your blood pressure, and also by removing stress on a person’s heart as well as other organs.

Mostly, your La Jolla sleep apnea doctor will recommend use of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure or CPAP to deal with your sleep apnea problem, though under certain circumstances you may even require undergoing surgery to permanently remove troublesome tissues. A good La Jolla sleep apnea doctor that could do everything required to treat your sleep apnea problem is Dr. Schnierow who is also a sleep specialist at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.

Sleep apnea is a very serious disease that kills millions of people every year. This is something that can affect anybody without any regard to the age, gender or race of the person. The highest risk factor points to people who are above forty years of age and suffer from obesity. The medication for sleep apnea in most cases would be recommended to be taken life long, though this depends upon the individual conditions and medical history.

What Does The Medication For Sleep Apnea And Treatment Involve?

The treatment and medication for sleep apnea would be determined after the medical practitioner has subjected you to a thorough check up. It is also very important that the doctor analyzes your sleep pattern and medical history before deciding what medication for sleep apnea would be the best for you.

The most widespread method of treating sleep apnea is with the CPAP or the continuous positive airway pressure. This is a simple yet very effective system wherein a sleep apnea mask is used on the face that provides the right air pressure to the airway while you are asleep. Though this is extremely effective, it is not the favorite because it is not comfortable.

There are many factors that influence what type of medication for sleep apnea you should take. However, the treatment should be done only after you ensure that the diagnosis has been done correctly. It is very easy to confuse lack of sleep due to high stress and work pressure as sleep apnea as it is vice versa. You need to be very sure that you are suffering form sleep apnea before you commence with the medication for sleep apnea and treatment.

This medication sometimes would include anti-depressants as this affliction has been seen developing in the wake of mental breakdowns or situation where you feel depressed and dejected. The medication more often than not is excellent when used in conjunction with CPAP and counseling.

Timely Treatment Can Save Your Life – Have A Check Up Today

Do not treat any disease lightly as health is indeed your most priceless possession. When you loose health, you loose everything. If you suffer from anything that remotely resembles sleep apnea, immediately have it checked and start the medication as prescribed. Help is available once the right diagnosis is made and hopefully, with the right treatment and medication you would be able to fight this problem square on.

The most common form of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. To date, researchers and healthcare professionals have not come to a single conclusion about the exact cause of obstructive sleep apnea. The soft palate is the most affected region of obstruction for most of the individuals having obstructive sleep apnea. It occurs as a result of muscle relaxation to a certain degree when the air passage gets fully collapsed and turns out to be obstructed.

The Cycle of Sleeping Disruption

Since the air passage collapsed, breathing ceases and the individual wakes up as a result of obstructed air passage. This waking up typically lasts for few seconds and the again the individuals sleeps. This persistent disruption averts the individual from reaching the deep sleep level, that is, Rapid Eye Movement (REM) level sleep, which our body desperately needs in order to become rejuvenated and to fight off against different adverse psychological and physical health conditions.

Potential Risk Factors

Needless to say, obesity and overweight take many tolls from people’s life, once occurred. Obstructive sleep apnea is no exception. The most essential cause of obstructive sleep apnea is overweight or obesity. It occurs mainly because excessive buildup of fat on both sides of the air passage turns out it to be narrow, especially when the muscles release. Another important risk factor of obstructive sleep apnea is age. It is mainly due to the fact that aging contributes to a decreasing muscle mass.

Signs, Symptoms and Complications

The major signs and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea stem from disturbance in the normal sleep pattern. The recurrent arousal and inability to reach deep sleep may lead to daytime sleepiness, irritation, anxiety, changes in personality and behavior, memory impairment, depression and many others. In addition, it also contributes to drowsy drive syndrome, which results in an increasing risk for automobile accidents. Lack of oxygen supply puts serious threat over cardiovascular system and increases the risk of congestive heart failure and stroke.

Available Treatment Methods

There is a wide variety of treatment methods available to treat obstructive sleep apnea. The first attempt includes weight reduction. It can be followed by positive pressure therapy, positional therapy, surgical interventions and using oral appliances. The positive pressure therapy has three components, namely, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), bi-level positive airway pressure (BPAP) and autotitration. Positional therapy is based on the assumption that specific positioning may help the patient get out of the problem of snoring or shortness of breath.

Patients with sleep apnea have difficult time breathing during sleeping. Apnea is a Greek word that means ‘without breathe’. For patients with sleep apnea there can be several causes for their sleep apnea and it can be important to speak with a physician to get sleep apnea identified in a patient. Sleep apnea causes the patient to stop breathing for more than ten seconds at a time and can be caused by either interrupted brain signals that control breathing or by the muscles in the throat relaxing and causing the airway to become constricted.

Sleep apnea can be difficult to diagnose as many patients don’t realize that their symptoms may be the cause of a condition. Symptoms of sleep apnea include daytime drowsiness, snoring, headaches and even a sore throat in the morning. Many of these complaints can be written off as just temporary or not even noticed by a patient.

For patients that are looking into having surgery, it can be very important to find out if sleep apnea is a problem. Perioperative sleep apnea can be a critical problem for anesthesiologists to deal with and they need to be made aware if sleep apnea is a concern.

Finding Out If A Patient Is At Risk For Perioperative Sleep Apnea

A questionnaire needs to be completed by patients in order to evaluate their risk for perioperative sleep apnea. An anestisialogist will conduct an interview with the patient to see if there are any possible risk factors for perioperative sleep apnea.

Perioperative sleep apnea can be a huge problem during surgery as the patient is put to sleep and the muscles in the throat are relaxed causing this condition to occur. If there is some concern in regards to sleep apnea this can be closely monitored to avoid complications from this disorder.

A patient at risk for perioperative sleep apnea will also need to be closely monitored after the surgery to make sure that their throat doesn’t swell causing them to stop breathing. A Continuous Positive Air Pressure machine may be used to keep the airway open. This machine pumps oxygen straight into the airways through a mask that is placed over the patient’s nose. The constant pressure keeps the airway open and oxygen flowing appropriately.

If a patient does have some signals that perioperative sleep apnea will be an issue, the proper medical responses can be put into place to prevent any problems during surgery. Be honest in your interview with the doctors so that they are aware of any potential problems.

Sleep apnea can cause a variety of medical problems, but it’s also been shown to result in psychological ones as well. When the normal and continuous flow of oxygen is interrupted during sleep, the brain is deprived of this vital element and the person can experience debilitating effects. Understanding this condition and recognizing the psychological symptoms that accompany sleep apnea can lead to the proper treatment and a complete relief.

Why is Sleep Apnea Dangerous?

Although sleep apnea is a very common disorder, many people may be affected by it but not know they have it. Basically, this condition causes a person to stop breathing during sleep. Throat muscles that relax too much and narrow the airways or even close the opening for a short time can cause this. The tongue can also fall back across the airway during sleep and this will affect breathing. The end result is the same: the brain is deprived of necessary oxygen, which contributes to a host of other problems. Snoring is usually present in a person who suffers from sleep apnea. This may be the brain’s way of alerting the sleeper that the airway is blocked. The sound of the snoring may be loud enough to wake up the person, who may then change their sleeping position. Sleeping on the side instead of the back may decrease sleep apnea episodes.

Psychological Aspects of Sleep Apnea

While there are many physical issues that result from sleep apnea, the psychological ones may be subtler to recognize and accurately diagnose. The first aspect we see in this condition is that the person does not receive a restful night’s sleep. The body requires a certain amount of sleep to restore, repair and recharge the body’s major organs right down to the cellular level. If this doesn’t happen, the person will feel exhausted in the morning. Daytime drowsiness is present, and this overpowering desire to sleep will stay with the person throughout the day. This will cause frustration and irritability, as the person needs to stay awake to perform their daily tasks. Problems with concentration and memory loss are also common. All of these emotions will add up and contribute to a growing sense of depression. The person may even feel like they are losing their mind, as their ability to think clearly is diminished. The only desire may be to stay in bed and get the rest they think they need, when in reality, they should be seeking treatment for their sleep disorder. In extreme cases, the psychological problems of sleep apnea may include thoughts of suicide. If the brain is continually deprived of oxygen night after night, the quality and purpose of a person’s life steadily declines. Anti-depressant drugs are not effective in this case because the medical condition of sleep apnea needs to be diagnosed and effectively treated first.
